Cần Thơ absorbed Sóc Trăng and Hậu Giang

Three Mekong Delta entities became one. A tour sold as crossing three provinces now stays inside a single city.

01What changed

The 2025 reform merges Cần Thơ, Sóc Trăng and Hậu Giang into one entity, which keeps the name Cần Thơ and its status as a centrally governed city. The administrative centre stays in Cần Thơ.

The reform took effect on 1 July 2025. The district tier is abolished nationwide.

02What it changes in practice

The Cái Răng floating market, the Phong Điền one and the Khmer pagodas of Sóc Trăng now sit in the same city.

An address naming Sóc Trăng or Hậu Giang province refers to territory that still exists, under an entity name that is gone. It is still understood locally; a form expects Cần Thơ.

03How to check it yourself

The list of the 34 provinces and cities produced by the reform is published by the Vietnamese government news service. The internal division falls to a separate National Assembly Standing Committee resolution.

The exact number of commune-level units in the new city could not be confirmed on the verification date.

04The principle behind the reform

Vietnam went from 63 provinces and cities to 34, and commune-level units from 10,035 to 3,321. Only two local levels remain: the province or city, then the commune or the ward.

05What happened to the districts

Before the reform, reaching a commune in the delta meant naming three tiers: province, district, commune. The district is gone.

A tour operator listing “Phong Điền district, Cần Thơ” names a level that no longer exists. The market is where it was; the address has one tier fewer.

06What this sheet does not say

The detail of the new city’s units, for lack of a confirmed source. Nor where to sleep, what time to leave for a floating market, or what a boat costs.
